COMING SOON: Expanded Behavioral Health Hospital
Patients with behavioral health needs are critically underserved in Northwestern/Central Pennsylvania and beyond. To address this need in our region, the expansion of our current facility at Penn Highlands DuBois East will create a 126-bed campus providing a comprehensive continuum of behavioral health services. The new facility will offer care to people with a dual diagnosis of mental health disorder and substance abuse disorder, as well as drug and alcohol detox and rehabilitation. Eventually, this new addition will house a psychiatric medicine residency program.
The new campus, which is scheduled to be completed by 2022, will feature:
- A walk-in urgent care center specific to behavioral health issues offering immediate care with referral to follow-up inpatient or outpatient services as needed
- An outpatient behavioral health program
- A child/adolescent behavioral health unit, with an extended acute care unit
- Adult behavioral health units
- A new dual diagnosis unit for patients who need behavioral health services as well as drug and alcohol detox and rehabilitation
- A new kitchen, new cafeteria for staff and a new patient cafeteria, which will also have a courtyard. The atrium of this addition will have a greenhouse appearance to provide a tranquil feel. The addition also will accommodate patient privacy needs with outpatient care and inpatient admitting areas.

Child & Adolescent Inpatient Program - Our child and adolescent inpatient program offers specialized treatment to young people age 5-18 who are exhibiting behavioral problems impairing their ability to function in the home and/or school. Adult Inpatient Program - Our adult inpatient program specializes in the treatment of emotional and behavioral difficulties experienced by individuals 18 years or older. To learn more about our Adult Inpatient Program, call 814-375-6337.
Geriatric Inpatient Programs - Penn Highlands Healthcare offers inpatient treatment units at two of our locations for our senior patients who are dealing with mental health disorders or emotional breakdowns. Substance Recovery Program - Penn Highlands Healthcare offers Level 4.0 inpatient withdrawal and treatment facility in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Level 4.0 treatment facilities are for people who require specialized care with the support of a full acute care hospital.

How Do I Make a Referral to Penn Highlands Behavioral Health Services?
Inpatient referrals are accepted 24 hours a day. Referrals to the inpatient units may be made by:
- Mobile crisis services
- Community mental health agencies
- Case managers
- Physicians
- School staffs
- Other professionals in the community
Individuals may also present themselves to the Penn Highlands DuBois Emergency Department for a mental health evaluation.
The criteria for admission includes, but is not limited to:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviors
- Homicidal thoughts and behaviors
- Acute symptoms or those made worse by hallucinations, delusions, or disturbance of affect and anxiety that threaten the patient's or other's well being
- Unsuccessful outpatient treatment
- Admission to either unit must be approved by a Penn Highlands DuBois psychiatrist.
What Types of Assessments and Evaluations Are Done to Determine What Care Is Needed?
Just like physicians recommend screening tests for your physical health, psychiatrists and psychologists may recommend evaluations and assessments to help get to the root of your behavioral health disorder so they can make an appropriate treatment recommendation. A psychological assessment can include formal questionnaires, clinical interviews, informal tests and surveys, a review of your medical history, a physical exam, lab tests, and observation of your behavior and reactions.
How Is Medication Used in the Treatment of Behavioral Health Conditions?
If your mental health provider finds that psychotherapy alone is not effective in treating your condition, they may prescribe medications, including anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, and mood stabilizers. This recommendation will be based upon a psychological assessment and will take into consideration your age, overall health, your treatment history, and other medications you may already be taking. Children, pregnant women, and some seniors also may have special considerations when determining what mental health medications, if any, should be used in treatment. Medication management is an essential part of the mental health care process as any reactions and changes should be closely monitored by a professional.
