We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers that affect the organs and structures of the urinary system and the male reproductive system. These include kidney, bladder, prostate, testicular and penile cancers.
Expert Urology Care
The field of urology extends to many organs and many conditions. And, unfortunately, many people suffer in silence when effective treatments are nearby. Penn Highlands urologists treat all conditions affecting the urinary tract, also called the urinary system. This system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The most common conditions that have very effective treatments include kidney stones, bladder stones, urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence (including stress incontinence) and overactive bladder.
Urology doctors also treat the male reproductive system. We treat common conditions in this field, including enlarged prostate (or BPH), prostatitis, erectile dysfunction and other types of male sexual dysfunction. Urologic oncology is a specialized type of urology that focuses on diagnosing and treating cancers in both of these areas. Urogynecology is a separate specialty that treats conditions of the female reproductive system, including cancer.

Providing Answers to Male Reproductive Health and Sexual Dysfunction
While urologists treat urinary system conditions in both men and women, they specialize in treating the male reproductive system while other specialists called urogynecologists specialize in the female reproductive system.
The male reproductive system includes the penis, scrotum, testicles and prostate. Common conditions that we treat include:
- Enlarged Prostate: This condition, technically called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is very common in men as they grow older. Half of men in their 60s will experience it and more than 80% will experience it by the time they reach their 70s. An enlarged prostate puts pressure on the bladder and urethra, causing difficulties with urination. There are several ways to treat BPH, including the UroLift implant and a surgery called Bipolar TURP. Read More.
- Prostatitis: Similar to BPH, prostatitis causes inflammation of the prostate which can result in painful or difficult urination as well as pain in the groin, pelvis or genitals. Usually prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics and over-the-counter pain medication.
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): ED, also called impotence, is the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It can result after removing the prostate to treat prostate cancer (a procedure called a prostatectomy) or it can be caused by one of many lifestyle or medical conditions. ED, for instance, can be caused by — and a warning sign of — clogged blood vessels that also can lead to heart attacks and strokes. While most men find ED embarrassing and do not want to discuss it, it is very important and very useful to talk to a urologist who can help identify the cause and, more importantly, treat the underlying cause and help return function. If lifestyle changes and medications don’t work, Penn Highlands urologist Dr. Indraneel Banerjee performs penile implants using the only implant on the market that has been clinically proven to have antibiotic treatment built in. The implant has high patient satisfaction for appearance and performance.
