Free Breast and Cervical Screening Day in Punxsutawney
Breast and cervical screenings are recommended for women age 40 and older. Penn Highlands Life’s Journey OB/GYN in Punxsutawney is offering a breast and cervical screening day on Monday, November 11, 2024 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The event will be held at Penn Highlands Life’s Journey OB/GYN inside the Punxsutawney Community Medical Building at 21911 Route 119, in Punxsutawney, Pa. A free clinical breast exam, mammogram, pelvic exam and pap smear will be available to individuals with or without insurance.
To qualify for the free screening, a person must be a resident of Pennsylvania and meet the following criteria:
- Be a biological female. You may qualify if you are a transgender woman (male to female) who is taking hormones or are a transgender man (female to male) who still has breasts.
- Gross household income at or below 250 percent of federal poverty guidelines.
- You are uninsured or underinsured, are financially unable to pay required deductible or co-payment or are enrolled in Medicaid Family Planning Services program. If you are enrolled in Medicare Part B or Medicaid, you are not eligible for PA-BCCEDP.
“I often dream of a time when women no longer die from breast or cervical cancer,” said Ashley Parsons MSN, FNP-C, IBCLC, NCMP, a certified registered nurse practitioner with Penn Highlands Life’s Journey OB/GYN. “The key to life after cancer is through early detection and management. No woman should die from either cancer when caught in the earliest stages. My goal is to make the exam as easy and painless as possible. Cervical screenings should start at age 21 and breast screenings start at age 40 unless the woman is considered higher risk due to genetic factors or family history of breast cancer.”
Ashley continued, “I am a 40-year-old mother of two daughters, a sister, a daughter and friend of many. I am more aware than ever of the importance of having early detection so I am able to be here for my daughters as well as setting an example for the women in my community. I had my first mammogram this year. The experience was phenomenal here at Penn Highlands Life’s Journey OB/GYN. The mammogram tech was so kind and my results were prompt. I pour my heart into what we do here and am proud to be able to serve the women of my community.”
