Penn Highlands Healthcare Participates in Appreciation Luncheon for State College Construction Crews

There are dozens of skilled craftsmen building the new Penn Highlands State College hospital and medical office building in Centre County. With the campus nearing completion for a summer 2024 opening, Penn Highlands Healthcare recently participated in an appreciation luncheon for the nearly 150 workers constructing the campus.

“With the coordination of architects and engineers along with many different types of skilled tradesmen, you have created a state-of-the-art hospital and medical office building,” said Michelle R. Carns, System Sales Manager for Penn Highlands Healthcare, as she welcomed the group. “You should take great pride in the fact that you have helped build a new healthcare facility for the Centre County region.”

Prior to lunch, members of the Penn Highlands Healthcare Marketing, Communications and Sales Team distributed stickers featuring LEGO bricks to the crews for placement on their hard hats or other safety gear. They also held a drawing for small LEGO building sets of Penn Highlands State College so that lucky winners could have a keepsake from the project. Throughout the construction process, Penn Highlands Healthcare has used LEGO bricks on its website and in promotional materials because the colorful interlocking building blocks are associated with qualities similar to those that the health system represents.

Penn Highlands Healthcare currently has a custom-made, built-to-scale LEGO model of Penn Highlands State College prominently positioned at the State College Regional Airport near the baggage claim area. A smaller LEGO model of the hospital also is displayed at Discovery Space on N. Atherton Street in State College.

Penn Highlands State College is the ninth hospital in the Penn Highlands Healthcare system and marks the first time that the health system is building a hospital from the ground up to its specifications to meet the current and future needs of the Centre County Region. The expansion of services in the Centre County Region is a natural progression. Penn Highlands State College fits in very closely with Penn Highlands Tyrone — the other Penn Highlands Healthcare hospital along the I-99 corridor.
